It is situated in the eastern part of the borough, bounded by 14th Street to the south, 23rd Street to the north, Avenue C to the east, and 1st Avenue to the west. Stuyvesant Town was built in the late 1940s as a public housing development, intended to provide affordable housing. The development consists of 110 buildings and more than 11,000 apartments, spread over 80 acres of land. It was named after Peter Stuyvesant, the last governor of New Amsterdam, which later became New York City. In 2006, Stuyvesant Town was sold to a private real estate firm, and the apartments were gradually converted to market-rate rentals.
