The neighborhood is also home to a number of artists, designers, and creative professionals, who are attracted by its bohemian atmosphere and loft-style apartments. The area was originally industrial and commercial, but was converted into residential lofts and studios in the 1960s and 1970s. The neighborhood underwent a period of gentrification in the 1980s and 1990s, and is now one of the most expensive and sought-after neighborhoods in New York City.
